Anything But Ordinary: How to Get the Most out of The Ordinary Skincare.

When shopping for skincare, I want anything but ordinary, and I will readily admit that I will grin and bear the brunt of the mounting cost of having a routine- if, it works for me. I don’t pertain to be an expert aesthetician nor do I want to be- just to know the products are working, what each one does and to reap their benefits while walking around with a clear-as-day complexion that wouldn’t go amiss on Bella Hadid. However, reality does hit home and I do have a finite amount of expenditure. Like most millennials these days, I was bombarded with the ‘brand of the moment’ The Ordinary and their sexy apothecary style bottles and ORDERED EVERYTHING when I saw the prices and slavered it on morning and night hoping to see instant Instagram skin. 18 or o months later and a lot more research and I have found my holy grail skin routine. I used to be as oily as I was young however I now suffer from normal-to-dry skin with an oily t-zone and the three products mentioned here work well for me- a full-time worker who can get lazy when exhausted from a day of commuting, retail then freelancing.

Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion

Originally called ‘Advanced Retnoid 2%’, this little beauty is anti-aging in a bottle, working away at all those fine lines while you sleep and leaving you glowing like morning sex and a strong coffee. When I first brought, this I’ll admit I didn’t have a foggiest what it was for but these days, anti-aging and sun protection are my two main priorities. This product has definitely been responsible for keeping spots off of my face and is great for sensitive skin as it is a non-irritation retinoid which most prescribed ones tend to be. Additionally, for £8.00 you will not find an anti-ageing OR a retinoid product for this price anywhere, especially 30ml and THAT WORKS WONDERS! Once more, its vegan, cruelty-free & alcohol-free.

Lactic Acid 10% + HA 5%.

The Mildest of the bunch, this cruelty-free product is first and foremost an exfoliator. The ingredients, however, counteract the effects of inflammation and sensitivity associated with an exfoliator. This is a product I apply nightly in a regime as it is a non-abrasive exfoliator which is perfect to use with other treatments however, I swap it out if I ever have compromised skin. This was a favourite among the original line launch and I can see why- anyone with spot and acne prone skin this would be perfect for, even my pores are much less visible using this. The only complaint I have with this product is the smell. I never normally complain when it comes to smell, as a lot of skincare products can be perfumed. The Ordinary however have their products stripped back to the raw science and the overwhelming odour of the tangy pepperberry peaks through massively even with a dropper-size worth. The smell does eventually evaporate but, if you’re not one for strong citrusy smells- beware. Again, this little bottle of skin salvation weighs in at £5.50! Any product with the words ‘Lactic Acid’ shoot up to cost a pretty penny and anyone with a working student discount can get a further 10% off and next day delivery as brand directory giant ASOS is a large stockist!

AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

This product I saw advertised heavily as it wasn’t released until a later date and I brought into ALL the hype let me tell you! From the pretty purple colour to the frosted glass, the claim of a ‘ten-minute facial’ in a bottle had me sold. Unlike the lactic acid, this exfoliator is more intense focusing on the skins top layer to provide a bright and even skin tone and radiance. This product is all about getting the smooth texture everyone aims for, smoothing out lines and shrinking pores. This product (for me at least) is a once-a-week shebang, which suits my busy lifestyle as I can pop it on while I flick through Netflix or catch up with a good book, however, it’s not for the faint of heart- this stings like a mother! My skin and I are used to it by now, but this is one of those products I like to believe that you can feel working. The Pinkberry is also back in this bottle but for some reason, this formula smells great and way less overpowering. Although this formula will make you look like the Delphine LaLaurie (AHS Quote) the stinging dies down instantly and will leave you blemish free for a whopping £6.30!

I hope this gave you a little insight into my skin and the journey I’ve been on since puberty to get it just right. The products I listed here may work for you or not, but it is essential you use them correctly to reap the appropriate benefits. It is possible to give yourself amazing skin and a targeted routine and I hope this gives some insight that great skin doesn’t have to break the bank.
